2017 Nevada State Homebrew Competition is an AHA/BJCP sanctioned competition open to any NV homebrewer age 21 and older.  Professional brewers are permitted to be entrants as long as the entry was not brewed on commercial equipment at a commercial facility.

An entry is a set of TWO bottles from a single batch of beer, cider or mead. (1st round plus best of show). All entries must be handcrafted products, containing ingredients available to the general public, and made using private equipment by hobbyist brewers (i.e., no use of commercial facilities or Brew on Premises operations, supplies, etc.).

In order to provide anonymity of brewer’s bottles during the judging, its important they do not contain distinguishing characteristics, therefore we REQUIRE that all entries meet the following guidelines:

  • Each entry consists of two (2) brown or green glass, 10 to 14 ounce bottles of homebrew (this means no bombers!). Each bottle has no label (adhesive or painted) or other distinguishing marks.
    • Bottles with raised glass lettering are discouraged but permitted.
  • Each bottle is capped with an unmarked silver or gold cap.
    • Use a permanent black marker to obliterate any and all words or pictures on the caps. No flip top or screw cap bottles.
  • Corked bottles meeting the above standards are permitted provided they are capped over or have a cage retaining the cork.
  • Entry forms should be attached to bottles with a rubber band only; glue and/or tape are unacceptable and will result in disqualification of the entry.
  • Non-compliant bottles will be disqualified. Any non-compliant bottles received may be judged (at the discretion of the competition organizers) but are not eligible for mini-best of show or awards.

Please fill out the entry forms completely. Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified per the 2015 BJCP StyleGuidelines. Failure to note such ingredients, carbonation levels, or sweetness may impact the judges’ scoring of your entry.

Specialty Categories Requiring Additional Information:

  • Entrants MUST specify strength level (hydromel or light mead; standard mead; sack or strong mead).

An entrant is the one or more people submitting an entry. Member(s) of an entrant must have actively contributed to brewing, fermenting, and bottling an entry. Every member must be at least 21 years of age.

Entrants are not limited to one entry in each category but may only enter each subcategory once. For example, participants may enter a Belgian Tripel (26C) and Belgian Dark Strong Ale (26D), but may not enter two Belgian Dark Strong Ales, even if they are different brews. No member of an entrant may submit another entry of the same subcategory, whether as an individual entrant, a member of the same entrant, or a member of another entrant.

Judges and stewards will be allowed to enter the competition, but no judge or steward will be assigned to a category for which they are entrants.

The competition organizers are not responsible for mis-categorized entries, mailed entries that are not received by the entry deadline, or entries that arrived damaged.

Qualified judging of all entries is the primary goal of our event. Judges will evaluate and score each entry according the 2015 BJCP guidelines (http://bjcp.org/stylecenter.php.) The consensus score will rank each entry in its category. Each flight will have at least one BJCP judge.
